The term “maximum oxygen consumption” (VO2 max) was first described and used by Hill and Herbst in the 1920s. The basic principles of the theory of VO2 max were as follows:

  • – There is an upper limit to oxygen consumption,
  • – There is a natural difference in VO2 max values,
  • – A high VO2 max is necessary for successful participation in the Middle and Long distance races,
  • – VO2 max is limited by the ability of the cardiovascular system to carry oxygen to the muscles.

VO2 max characterizes the maximum amount of oxygen used and is calculated by subtracting the amount of exhaled oxygen from the amount of oxygen absorbed. Since VO2 max is used to quantify the capacity of the aerobic system, the indicator is influenced by a large number of factors along the long oxygen pathway from the environment to the mitochondria in muscles.

What is my VO2 max?

You can use the following formula for calculating VO2 max:
VO2 max = Q x (CaO2-CvO2), where Q is cardiac output, CaO2 is oxygen content in arterial blood, CvO2 is oxygen content in venous blood.

As with most physiological parameters, the efficiency with which the body uses oxygen is determined by genetics. On the other hand, the maximum VO2 max is a dynamic value that reacts to lifestyle and training. With the right approach, almost everyone can improve this indicator. Professional athletes are the least likely to improve it because they are already in great shape, so the VO2 max dynamics is most relevant for beginners and middle-level athletes. With regular aerobic training, such as running, walking, cycling, triathlon and skiing, the VO2 max will increase as one of the objective indicators of the training process efficiency.
